Knee-deep water fills houses as Kamwari River overflows in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi – World News Network

Bhiwandi (Maharashtra) [India], July 14 (ANI): Amid heavy rain and thunderstorms in many parts of Maharashtra, the Kamwari River in the Bhiwandi area of Thane is overflowing, causing water to enter houses of people living near the banks.
Knee-deep water has filled the houses of people living in the Sultania Gali slum area near the Kamwari River in Bhiwandi, with many people being displaced from their homes due to the rise in river water level.
According to the residents of the area, till now, no official from the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation has reached out to inquire about the flood situation, which is causing problems for people living here.
“No one from the municipality comes here. There is garbage everywhere. Every year, our house gets flooded because the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation does not clean the drains,” said one resident.
“We bear a lot of losses. For two years, they haven’t cleaned the drains; let it be the river. No one from the municipality comes here, and no work is done in the alleyway,” said another.
Another resident from the area said that the river hasn’t been clean for 20 years, even though funds were allotted for it.
“No one from the municipality has ever visited. For the last 20 years, the river hasn’t been clean. There were a lot of funds allotted for cleaning the river but nothing has been done. No one bats an eye on this issue; if they focus on the issue, then there won’t be this much water. Every year, it’s the same thing,” he said.
The people of the area also demand that the Maharashtra Government as well as the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation fully compensate them for the losses they bore due to the rise in water.
Today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast moderate to intense spells of rainfall in isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Sindhudurg and Ghat in Pune. (ANI)
