Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], July 30 (ANI): Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Diya Kumari lauded Indian shooter Manu Bhaker for securing a second consecutive bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. She expressed optimism that Bhaker would continue to win more medals at the current Olympics.
Diya Kumari said, “It is a matter of pride for the country that Manu Bhaker has won her second medal in the Olympics. This is a significant achievement for India. I would like to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for encouraging sportspersons to advance. I also congratulate her family members on this momentous occasion, and I am hopeful that she will win more medals for the country in the coming days.”
On Tuesday, India’s shooting ace Manu Bhaker made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals at the same Olympics. Bhaker and her partner, Sarabjot Singh, secured bronze in the 10 m air pistol mixed team event.
Earlier, Bhaker had won bronze in the women’s individual 10 m air pistol event.
The Manu-Sarabjot duo triumphed over South Korea’s Lee Wonho and Oh Ye Jin with a score of 16-10 in the bronze medal play-off match. This victory increased India’s medal tally to two at the Paris Olympics, with both Bhaker and Sarabjot consistently shooting regular 10s in the series against the Koreans.
Manu Bhaker is the first athlete from the Indian contingent post-independence to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. Previously, Norman Pritchard won two medals for India, both silver, in the 200 m and 200 m hurdles at the 1900 Olympics.
The Manu-Sarabjot team’s medal is India’s first-ever shooting team medal in Olympic history.
Additionally, Bhaker joins an elite group of Indian athletes with multiple individual Olympic medals, including PV Sindhu (badminton silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020) and Sushil Kumar (wrestling bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver at the 2012 London Olympics). (ANI)
