Assam: STF seizes 22,000 boxes of foreign cigarettes in Amingaon area of Kamrup district – World News Network

Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 1 (ANI): The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam police seized 22,000 boxes of foreign cigarettes in the Amingaon area of Assam’s Kamrup district, an official said.
The STF team on Wednesday apprehended a person and detained three others.
Pranab Jyoti Goswami, CPRO of Assam police, said that, acting on intelligence input received at the STF, Assam, foreign cigarettes violating COTPA, tax norms, etc. would be transported by a truck bearing registration number HR-38Z-8530 from Silchar to Raipur (Chattisgarh) and the truck was intercepted at Amingaon area in Kamrup district.
“On being searched, 11 big cartons of foreign cigarettes hidden under furniture consignments were detected and seized. A total of 22,000 cigarette boxes and 4,40,000 cigarettes were found, and the driver, Parashu Baishya, was apprehended,” the CPRO of Assam police said.
“Based on the confession of the driver regarding stocking point, a raid was carried out at the premises of MR King Godown located in Boragaon and the manager, Sahil Dewan, and two others, Ashique Ikbal and Ajit Saloi, were picked up,” the CPRO of Assam police said.
Necessary legal measures are being taken. Further investigation into the matter is underway. More details are awaited.
Earlier, Assam police seized 30,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 9 crore in Cachar district and arrested an accused in connection with the same, police said on Saturday.
The search operation was conducted on the night of July 27 following a specific input regarding the transportation of narcotic substances in the Katakhal area under the jurisdiction of Dholai Police Station.
The arrested accused has been identified as Abdul Alim (42) a resident of Saptagram village under Dholai police station.
In this connection, a scooty used in illegal transportation has been seized. The consignment of the narcotics substance is illegally transported from Aizawl, police said. (ANI)
