Lakhimpur (Assam) [India], September 4 (ANI): In a significant leap to transform North Lakhimpur town into a clean and garbage-free area, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the MRF (material recovery facility) and waste-to-compost plant constructed under the North Lakhimpur Municipal Corporation at a function held in Lakhimpur on Wednesday.
Built at a cost of Rs 5.75 crore, the facility will be used for the scientific disposal of waste.

It may be noted that the state government is adopting a unique initiative to transform wastelands in Assam. Through meticulous planning and proper processing of legacy waste, the government is freeing up spaces to create urban forests to improve the quality of life for citizens.
The Chandmari area of 14 number wards of North Lakhipur Town was freed from the legacy waste, which had been the dumping ground for 40-50 years.
The extent of garbage was accumulated in and around the Sumdiri River, along with nearly four hectare land areas of the ward. With the inauguration of the project, Sumdiri River will get a new lease of life, and around 16 bigha land will be reclaimed. This 16 bigha of land, along with the additional allocation of 10 bigha of land, will now be developed as ‘Urban Forest and Urban Retreat Zone’.

Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal, MLA Manab Deka, and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

CM Sarma, as a part of his tour to Lakhimpur district, also visited the project site connecting North Lakhimpur-Ghunasuti on the Subansiri River, where a major RCC bridge is being constructed. He reviewed the construction progress of the project, which will be built using an estimated cost of Rs. 400 crore.
He also asked the concerned officials for its timely completion. It may be noted that the foundation for the project was laid on December 16, 2022.
CM Sarma also inspected the progress of construction of the Lakhimpur interstate bus terminus, which the Chief Minister said will be operational by August 2025.

He also visited the construction site of the rail over bridge on Rangajan Road in Lakhimpur and assessed the progress of the work. With a project cost of Rs. 62.52 crore, the ROB is being constructed on a 50:50 cost sharing basis between the state government and railways.
CM Sarma asked the executing agency to complete the work within a stipulated time, ensuring quality of work. The Chief Minister also visited and inspected the under-construction stadium in Lakhimpur.
He also took stock of the progress of the work.

The Chief Minister said that under his government, development of the districts on the north bank of the Brahmaputra has received an unprecedented impetus. Upgradation of Lakhimpur College to a university and starting a nursing college in Lakhimpur Medical College are on the government’s priority agenda for Lakhimpur district, the Chief Minister added.
