Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 17 (ANI): The Post Graduate Students’ Union of Gauhati University, the research student community, the teachers’ community as well as the families of Gauhati University took out a peace protest demanding justice and proper punishment to the guilty in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
A huge peace rally was held at the main entrance of Gauhati University with a candle in hand.
More than a thousand students and teachers of the university participated in the rally.
Students and teachers demanded stringent punishment for the culprits through a fast-track court through protests.
The protestors also urged the government to be strict in order to prevent such incidents in the country and no one does politics in this incident.
Additionally, the students also sung s peaceful song singing a gathering at the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cemetery in the university and protested for peace with a call to stop the rape in the country.
One of the protestors said that the compensation of Rs 10 lakh would not do justice to the victim
“The CM Mamata Banerjee has given compensation to the victim but that will not bring any justice to her. How can money bring any relief to the victim’s parents,” he questioned.
Further, the protestor also said that the incident has brought shame to West Bengal but not to the CM Mamata Banerjee.
“The incident brought shame to the state of West Bengal but not to the CM of the state,” he said.
Earlier today, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Mangalagiri junior doctors and medical students held a protest demanding justice for the victim.
A protesting student told ANI, “Days after the incident, we have failed as humans and as Indian society, as not much progress has been made in the case.”
“I truly feel that, three days after this incident, we have truly failed as humanity and as Indian society. The only question that arises out of this is that, while the entire nation’s doctors are standing today against the monstrous act that happened three days ago, there has still been no promising progress. We will not stop until we get justice,” a protestor told ANI.
A faculty member who also participated in the protest questioned, After 78 years of independence, if we can’t have a safe workplace, what can we assume? (ANI)
