If Centre carries out dredging activity properly, West Bengal will not face flood-like situation every year: CM Mamata Banerjee – World News Network

Howrah (West Bengal) [India], July 8 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit out at the Centre and alleged that dredging activity is not carried out properly in the Ganga River, due to which West Bengal faces flood-like situation in the central regions every year.
Banerjee said, “Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) suddenly discharges water. Earlier, it used to discharge without information. Now we have said that this cannot be done without our permission. Many places, from Durgapur to Birbhum, face flood-like situations. DVC has to report to us, then only discharge water. If the central government conducts dredging activity properly in the Ganga river, then we will not face a floodlike situation,” she further added.
Mamata Banerjee said, “West Bengal is badly affected during rains as water from higher regions is accumulating in the central areas. Every year even after spending crores of rupees we are unable to solve this problem. In many places, cracks have developed in the roads, especially in North Bengal. In Jalpaiguri, there is flood-like situation. In Cooch Behar, relief centres have been formed. The situation in Darjeeling is normal.”
She also hit out at the railway department and alleged that although the railway received a lot of money from the region, it did not take any initiative to restore normalcy in flooded areas.
She added, “Railway earns a lot of money from here. If water gets flooded near railway lines, then why will the railway not restore normalcy there? Transformers have to be restored at certain places.” (ANI)
