Pune (Maharashtra) [India], August 25 (ANI): Pune City Police on Sunday booked over 300 people for illegally assembling, conducting a protest march without permission, and raising objectionable slogans in front of the Pune Collector’s office.
The protest was in response to alleged objectionable remarks made by Ramgiri Maharaj against Islam, according to Pune City Police officials.
The protest march took place on Friday, and the police registered a case under sections 189(2), 190, 196, and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as sections 135 and 37(1) of the Maharashtra Police Act, at Bund Garden Police Station on Saturday, according to Pune City Police officials.
The protest was organised under the banner of ‘A Sarvdharm Sambhav Mahamorcha’.
Earlier, on Tuesday, a group of people in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district staged a protest against Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj over his controversial remarks.
Notably, Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj, during a recently held religious event in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, allegedly made derogatory remarks against Islam and Prophet Mohammed, which led to tension between the two communities.
Multiple cases were registered against Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj at three different police stations in Mumbai for allegedly making objectionable remarks about Prophet Mohammed.
Hundreds of people from the Muslim community gathered at Wagle Police Station in the Wagle Complex of Maharashtra’s Thane district, demanding that a case be registered against Ramgiri Maharaj.
Various religious leaders of the Muslim community in Thane were also present at the police station.
The police have registered an FIR against Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj under sections 196(1)(A), 197(1)(D), 299, 302, 352, 353(1)(b), 353(1)(C), and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and have initiated an investigation. (ANI)
