“..shows condition of our country, not just Bengal”: Congress over Kolkata rape-murder case – World News Network

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 29 (ANI): Taking a dig at the Centre over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Congress leader Sofia Firdous said that even after 10 years of BJP’s rule crimes are still increasing daily which reflects the present condition of the country and not just Bengal.
Sofia Firdous said, ” When the Nirbhaya case happened in 2012, the whole nation was shaken. After that, during the Congress govt in 2013, criminal laws were amended…10 years after the new govt, crimes are still increasing daily…fast-track court was also introduced at that time, but how many cases were solved and how many were convicted? How many were punished? This itself shows the condition of our country. This is not just the issue of Bengal…”
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is not in favour of the investigation of Kolkata rape and murder case as it may reveal many secrets.
Chowdhury also alleged that Banerjee fears the investigation might reveal sensitive secrets and is attempting to divert attention by making inflammatory statements and intimidating the public.
However, Chowdhury claimed that such tactics are failing as the case has ignited widespread protests and become a mass movement.
“Mamata Banerjee does not want this case to be investigated properly because many secrets will be revealed, she does not want this to happen, so she is trying to divert attention by speaking nonsense and scaring people but people will not get afraid as this has become a mass movement,” Chowdhury told ANI.
West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar wrote to Governor CV Ananda Bose over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s revenge remark and sought intervention in the matter.
In the letter, Majumdar claimed that Mamata Banerjee’s statement attempted to threaten and incite violence and demanded her resignation over her statement made during her address to the Student Wing of TMC in Kolkata.
“I am writing to bring to your urgent attention the recent statements made by Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee during her address to the Student Wing of TMC in Kolkata. She brazenly incited the gathering by declaring, “I never sought revenge, but now, do what needs to be done.” This blatant endorsement of revenge politics from the state’s highest office is concerning. Furthermore, she also made inflammatory remarks, stating, Remember, if Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn,” Majumdar said in his letter to Governor Bose.
In the letter, Majumdar said that Mamata Banerjee’s statement attempts to threaten, incite violence, and sow hatred. She should resign immediately. He added that it is the duty of every public servant, especially those in high authority, to foster peace and discourage violence.
“This is not the voice of a person in a constitutional position; it is the rhetoric of an anti-national. Her statement clearly attempts to threaten, incite violence, and sow hatred among the populace. She no longer merits holding such an important office and must resign immediately, it is the fundamental duty of every public servant, particularly those in high authority, to foster peace and discourage violence of any kind. The Chief Minister’s stance during this meeting is alarming and jeopardizes both the safety and security of the citizens of West Bengal and the integrity of the state,” he said in the letter.
“I respectfully urge you to recognize the gravity of this situation and initiate appropriate measures to address it judiciously. I look forward to your prompt and decisive action to protect the interests of the citizens of West Bengal and uphold the constitutional values of our nation,” Majumdar said.
Earlier today, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee clarified her recent remarks in her speech at the recent Trinamool Chhatra Parishad programme and stated that she did not utter a single word against students or their protests.
In a post on X, the West Bengal CM said that she totally supports the student movement as it is genuine.
“I detect a malicious disinformation campaign in some print, electronic and digital media that has been unleashed with reference to a speech that I made in our students’ programme yesterday. Let me most emphatically clarify that I have not uttered a single word against the (medical etc.) students or their movements. I totally support their movement. Their movement is genuine. I never threatened them, as some people are accusing me of doing. This allegation is completely false,” she said.
On Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee condemned BJP’s 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ and called it an attempt to “defame” Bengal.
Addressing a Trinamool ‘Chhatra Parishad’ foundation day programme in Kolkata yesterday, in response to BJP’s 12-hour long ‘Bengal Bandh’ call, the Chief Minister alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is using his party to cause a fire in Bengal over the Kolkata woman doctor rape and murder incident.
This came following the chaos and violence that took place on the streets of Kolkata on Tuesday where a protest march to West Bengal Secretariat ‘Nabanna’ was organised by the ‘Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj’ and other organisations, which aimed to protest the recent rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, which sparked nationwide outrage and since then several protests have been staged demanding justice for the victim.
Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh also came forward and said that the issue should be taken seriously and tough law should be enacted so that such crimes are not repeated.
Harbhajan Singh, who is Rajya Sabha MP of Aam Aadmi Party, said that the issue of women’s safety is very important and the issue will be raised in Parliament.
“Women’s safety is very important for all of us, there should be a law for it and it will be discussed in the Parliament as well. I feel that a law must be passed on this because if such incidents keep happening then how can we say that our country is safe for our mothers and sisters?” he asked.
“The victim was also our daughter, so this should be taken very seriously and it should not be made a political issue, everyone should get together and make a law on this so that any brutal person thinks a thousand times before committing such a crime,” Singh told ANI. (ANI)
