Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 28 (ANI): Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar staged a sit-in protest on the road at Baguiati in Kolkata during the 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ called by BJP in Bengal on Wednesday.
During the protest, Sukanta Majumdar spoke with reporters and said that the protest has transformed now into a people’s movement and their demand is the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
He said, “Police have turned into goons of Mamata Banerjee. These goons are attacking BJP workers. We are protesting for the youths. There are no jobs for the youth. Mamata Banerjee’s police are not allowing us to conduct any peaceful protest in a democratic way. They are unable to maintain the law and order. They are creating hegemony in the state. They are arresting the BJP workers in an unlawful way. We will continue with our protest. This protest has transformed into a people’s movement. We demand the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee.”
Meanwhile, in Asansol also BJP workers staged protests on railway tracks demanding justice for the woman doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Bappa Chatterjee, BJP leader told ANI, “The Bandh has been called for two reasons- the first is regarding the RG Kar incident and the second is yesterday, the youth and students had gathered to put forth their point in Nabanna but there is a dictatorship is going on in the state. She (Mamata Banerjee) herself is the police minister, the health minister and the chief minister herself. Despite being in charge of everything, neither the police administration is doing any work here, nor the health department…”
Earlier in the day, Sukanta Majumdar participated in a rally in Baguiati. Police and other security personnel wearing helmets were also present at the spot.
Majumdar told reporters, that they will start a seven-day dharna from August 29 after the Kolkata High Court permitted them.
“Kolkata HC has given us permission for a seven-day Dharna. We will start it from tomorrow…We welcome their verdict…There is no democracy here, police cannot stop firing but only stop BJP’s protest. The police can arrest BJP leaders but not the accused,” he told reporters.
BJP has called for a ’12 hour Bengal Bandh’ after Kolkata police resorted to lathi charge, use of water cannons and tear gas against the protestors in Nabnna Abhiyaan’ Rally. (ANI)
