Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], October 13 (ANI): From the transformative tenure of PM Narendra Modi as Chief Minister to his leadership as Prime Minister, Gujarat has witnessed unprecedented growth.
Over the past 23 years, Gujarat has made significant strides in various sectors, establishing itself as a leading state.
Among these achievements, the state’s performance in the renewable energy sector is particularly remarkable.

According to a release from Chief Minister’s office, Gujarat has emerged as a pioneer in the renewable energy sector, becoming a role model for other states. The state has achieved a total installed power generation capacity of 52,424 MW, out of which 50 per cent–25,472 MW–comes from renewable sources.
Gujarat is the first state to reach this milestone, showcasing the state’s effective leadership in promoting clean and sustainable energy in India.
“As of March 2023, Gujarat’s power generation capacity stood at 45,912 MW, with 19,435 MW contributed by renewable energy. By 2024, this capacity has increased by 6,512 MW, of which 6,036 MW is from renewable sources. This significant growth reflects Gujarat’s firm commitment to clean energy and its leadership in India’s broader sustainability mission,” the release said.
“However, this remarkable transformation did not happen overnight. Gujarat has made large-scale investments in solar, wind, and hybrid energy projects with a focus on the future. The state has consistently fostered innovation, created a policy-friendly environment, and ensured public and private sector participation, setting an example for other states,” it added.
Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, the state has strategically placed renewable energy at its core. In addition to meeting the electricity demands of its citizens, Gujarat is also ensuring a clean and green future for the coming generations. The state government has actively promoted investments in public projects by formulating proactive policies and has also opened the doors for private sector participation in renewable energy initiatives.
The Renewable Energy Summit 2024 showcased Gujarat’s strong leadership in the renewable energy sector to the world. This event, held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar from September 16 to 18, saw participation from global leaders in the energy sector, ministers, manufacturers, financial institutions, and policymakers, who discussed strategies to increase investment and find renewable energy solutions.

The release asserted that Gujarat is committed to securing a sustainable future through its dedication to renewable energy. Recognizing the long-term potential of renewable energy, the state has already invested Rs 43,450 crore in renewable energy plants, far surpassing the Rs 28,864 crore invested in the conventional power generation sector.
Notably, the Gujarat government’s ‘Gujarat Renewable Energy Policy’ has been extended until 2028, promising even faster growth. This policy supports new renewable energy solutions, including solar rooftop installations, floating solar farms, and canal-top solar projects. With its 1,600 km-long coastline and abundant sunlight, Gujarat is well-positioned to harness the maximum potential of renewable energy.
As per the release, Gujarat plans to add 7,130 MW of renewable energy capacity in the coming years, focusing on solar, wind, and hybrid energy projects to reduce environmental footprints and ensure growth in renewable energy production.
The achievements of Gujarat in the renewable energy sector are best exemplified by Modhera Solar Village, India’s first fully solar-powered village. Located in Mehsana district, Modhera receives its power from a 6 MW solar power plant connected to a 15 MWh battery energy storage system, ensuring 24-hour electricity even during power outages.
“Over 1,300 solar rooftop systems have been installed across the entire village, making it energy self-sufficient. Gujarat has demonstrated through this project how renewable energy can bring about societal change. Remarkably, the project has reduced electricity costs for the residents by 60 per cent, and many are now generating additional income by selling surplus energy back to the grid,” the release from Gujarat CMO said.
Today, Gujarat leads in the renewable energy sector, not just limited to villages. The state has constructed the Charanka Solar Park, which has a capacity of 500 MW and is one of the largest solar parks in India. Currently, the park generates 749 MW of electricity and hosts several small and large solar plants. In addition to contributing significantly to the grid, this park has created jobs and boosted the local economy.
Gujarat is also planning to establish India’s first offshore wind project near Pipavav with an estimated capacity of 2 GW. This project will not only enhance the state’s renewable energy capacity but also help reduce millions of tonnes of carbon emissions, further strengthening Gujarat’s role in India’s clean energy revolution.
The release also mentioned that the major benefit of Gujarat’s renewable energy initiatives is their positive impact on the environment. The Modhera Solar Village alone has reduced annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes, while the Charanka Solar Park reduces annual carbon emissions by 80 lakh tonnes. These projects will not only address the climate crisis but also help improve air quality across the state.
As a frontrunner in India’s renewable energy revolution, Gujarat is setting global benchmarks in adopting clean energy. Through pioneering projects like Modhera Solar Village, Charanka Solar Park, and the upcoming offshore wind farm, Gujarat is showing how visionary policies and strategic investments can build a sustainable future.
Gujarat’s commitment to renewable energy goes beyond generating electricity. With the resolve for a ‘Green Gujarat,’ the state is building a future that is environmentally responsible, economically prosperous, and socially inclusive. (ANI)
